The middle of the nineteenth century was the great age of the crinoline. Lynda Nead examines what this unique fashion meant to women, how it empowered and constrained

The middle of the nineteenth century was the great age of the crinoline. Dresses became bigger and more ornate; skirts grew wider and wider, devouring metres of fabric and decorated with flounces, fringes and ribbons. The style was facilitated by the development of the sewing machine and technological developments in textile production that introduced new machine-made light, gauzy fabrics, which supplemented the more established and expensive silks and taffetas and were suited to the purses of the middling classes. The key to this fashion, the frame for this confection of fabrics and ornament, was the hooped cage crinoline. Historians have been divided on whether the crinoline turned women into ‘exquisite slaves’ or was a sign of female assertiveness and subversion.

Discover | ECM Covers, Nils Frahm & Arvo Pärt

Listen today to the music of young Berlin-based composer Nils Frahm. His poignant music combining classical and electronic music reminds me Arvo Pärt compositions.

Nils’ father was a photographer and created many covers for ECM Records (Edition of Contemporary Music, created in 1969), the famous german visionary label. It’s no mistake that Arvo Pärt is one of the artist of ECM. We’ve come full circle.

Please discover the followings:
ECM is well known for the minimalist design of its covers (something new in the 70′), here:

Live | The Pirouettes @ Le Badaboum

the-pirouettes-1

Discover The Pirouettes a few weeks ago during their live show at parisian club Le Badaboum. Very (very) young, the talented duo Leo and Victoria are spreading something completely free on stage. Leaders with bands like Juniore or La Femme of the new french music scene, the energy of their pop electronica music sounds unreachable if you are not twentysomething. But no, above 30 you feel « safe » to hear stuff like that. « Safe » because it’s full of positive thoughts and that so rare. It’s not naïve it’s joyful and in a way it’s subversive today.

Listening to their music you cannot stop thinking of 80′ french bands like Elli & Jacno, Deux or even Rita Mitsouko (they cover a part of « Marcia Baila » in their song « Dernier métro »).

As in other art fields the changing is coming from the next generation and don’t need to be necessarily dull.
