It’s a precious time where students can work on exciting projects and met rising designers (Jasper Sinchai Chadprajong, Lucille Puton and Christine Phung) but also the french illustrator Aurore de la Morinerie.
It’s always interesting and an honor to follow the process of making. From the idea to the garment – to the garment to the exhibition, here is a new set of photos of the silhouettes (in processing) and the students at work.
Please consider the beautiful pleats made by Atelier Gerard Lognon who works for Haute Couture.

Last year i followed the fashion masterclass organized by Arts of Fashion Foundation and held at the Musée des Arts Décoratifs in Paris. Nathalie has asked me to be part of the team again, the pleasure was mine.
This year the themes were:
The modern dancer, is to create a daytime dress like a sculptor, based upon the work of Madame Grès (her technique of draping and fabric carving).
The flying tailor, is to create an everyday life menswear « garment », a combination of both innovation and function, based upon the work of Hussein Chalayan.
Twelve students from different countries (China, Switzerland, USA, France…) spend one month in Paris creating two silhouettes and fashion illustrations, this is some of them.

Stripes !
A future star, Anthony Vaccarello, Paris based fashion designer (born in Belgium), former Fendi fur fashion designer and winner of Festival International de la Mode d’Hyeres 2006 (Grand Prix) taught(1) his techniques of working to the students of the Arts of Fashion summer class.
It was very graphic, so i made a couple of close up of the stripes applied on the dummies. Some of these stripes even reminds me the Eiffel tower mesh or the Union Jack flag (i know my imagination have no limits ahem…).
These stripes are embellished with pearls, beads, knitting, organza, tulle… Before becoming gorgeous dresses.

A sample of the garments made by the students with Aurore Thibout and Laurence Teillet.
Now the project (quite conceptual) is nearly complete, the evolution since my first coming is huge and what surprise me more is the diversity.
From the concept (a garment from second-hand shirts) to the final result, each student use the prints, the stripes, the different parts of the shirts on his own way. We have dresses with volume, some using the graphic prints and the stripes, to create path that become shapes, some are very colourful, some are a gradient of pale colours, some are big and some are tiny (slideshow below). Next step the exhibition (July 29)!
Two models draw my attention because they reminds me works of famous designers. Below, the first photo of this post reminds me Yohji Yamamoto 1986’s dress, shoot by Nick Knight
… and below this Viktor & Rolf crazy collar shoot by Inez Van Lamsweerde and Vinooh Matadin reminds me the tiny garment in the slideshow
… et ci-dessous ce jabot fou de Viktor & Rolf shooté par Inez Van Lamsweerde et Vinooh Matadin me rappelle le tout petit vêtement présent dans le slideshow.

Dears readers
see the London based french fashion designer Laurence Teillet and the french fashion designer Aurore Thibout, public prize at Festival de la mode d’Hyères 2006 and both former Maison Martin Margiela teaching and giving great advices during the masterclass of Arts of Fashion here in Paris.
In the first video i focus on handcrafting, here we can appreciate the thinking process and see the ideas emerging during the exchange between professionals and students. Aurore and Laurence, help each students to find his own path. They also insist to never forget the shape and the volume, that how to give life to your garment.
The exhibition of the student’s work with Aurore Thibout, Laurence Teillet, Anthony Vaccarello, Natallia Pilipenka, Aurore de la Morinerie and Sasiwimol Sreevitoon will take place at 103 rue de Rivoli this July 29 (5pm-9pm).
A long video in english/french showing the process of creation by the students of the summer masterclass of Arts of Fashion Foundation. I only focus on the students here, next video will show teaching and advices by Aurore Thibout and Laurence Teillet. A bit technical, but very interesting. Enjoy it!
Invited by Nathalie Doucet to visit a masterclass in progress (called « Made in clothes ») at Musée des Arts Décoratifs…
By bringing together Aurore Thibout french fashion designer, winner of Festival International de la Mode d’Hyères 2006 & Laurence Teillet, fashion designer, London based, two formers Martin Margiela to lead a 5 days masterclass, AoFF give the opportunity to enhance creativity in fashion design.
The AoFF program offer the possibility to go further in the creative process (with the help of various designers and illustrators) by exploring new techniques of crafting, sewing, embroidering, etc.
Yesterday it was all that, some students are listening music to their iPod or laptop when sewing, some working on the floor, pinning fabrics together, some painting, some mixing materials and some thinking of drawing stripes on a dress made of shirts…
The workplans were a « beautiful mess » of multicolored threads and fabrics, pins and needles, papers, bags, ribbons, sketches… but what impressed me more is that all the people were very focus on their works. For some students it was their third masterclass, like a rendez-vous with inventiveness.
Seeing all these students, mostly new graduates, coming from all over the world (Switzerland, Colombia, France, United States, Russia, Brasil, etc.) all working in this studious atmosphere was like a come back to school for me.
I leave you with a slideshow of portraits i’ve done of the professionals(1),the students and some of the beautiful creative mess.
Don’t forget to check out Aurore Thibout’s work through art and fashion (but wearable): Memory clothes. Then, perhaps like me, you wonder why spending your time to insanely track the trends, when some designers develop some concept so interesting…
About the « Made in clothes » masterclass
This program is based on designing with a conscience: Being aware of our impact as consumers in our today’s society by re-using waste materials to experiment, refine and develop new types of materials, fabrics and possibilities for clothing. Combining a responsible philosophy of contemporary design with an artistic approach, the project will emphasize the link between Art and Fashion. Rethinking the process of making clothes. Up-cycling – Experimentation – Handmade – Work in progress.
